PROCESSIONS Banner-Making Workshop
22 April at 11:00 am - 5:00 pmFREE
OVADA Associates are invited to create a special PROCESSIONS banner and take part in a once-in-a-lifetime mass participation artwork to celebrate one hundred years of votes for women. It will honour the past, celebrate the present and ask what it is to be a woman in the 21st century.
In 1918, the Representation of the People Act gave the first British women the right to vote and stand for public office. One hundred years on, PROCESSIONS are inviting women* and girls across the UK to come and mark this historic moment as part of a living portrait of women in the 21st century. On Sunday 10 June 2018, thousands of women and girls in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London will walk together as part of this celebratory mass participation artwork. Wearing either green, white or violet, the colours of the suffrage movement, the PROCESSIONS will appear as a flowing river of colour through the city streets.
One hundred women artists are being commissioned to work with organisations and communities across the UK to create one hundred centenary banners for PROCESSIONS as part of an extensive public programme of creative workshops. Find out more about the groups and artists involved here. Community banner-making will also take place up and down the country, where participants will make hundreds of banners to bring with them on Sunday 10th June.
PROCESSIONS is an invitation to women* and girls nationwide to celebrate their right to vote and how that was achieved. It is a platform for them to voice their concerns and hopes for the future. Men are welcome to support the project by participating in the banner-making workshop and by joining the audience on 10 June to support the celebration. For further information about the project visit the FAQ page.
On Sunday 22 April (11am-5pm), artist Katie Taylor will lead a special PROCESSIONS banner-making workshop with OVADA Associates as part of DAWN ROSE RED. We invite Associates to come together to mark this special occasion by celebrating the lives of inspirational women* in their family and friendship groups. Participants will be invited to submit digital/scanned photos which will be added to the banner. The workshop will include sewing and photographic transfer techniques and will draw upon other skills within the group to create a unique banner that represents OVADA Associates. We ask that workshop participants attend PROCESSIONS in London on 10 June. We will travel from Oxford as a group and will keep travel costs as low as possible, with subsidised travel available if the cost would otherwise prevent you from taking part. To reserve a place on the workshop complete this short booking form. If you are not currently an Associate, you can find further details online.
*PROCESSIONS is an artwork; a portrait of women in the 21st century, made up of women, girls, those who identify as women and non-binary individuals. PROCESSIONS is not a march or demonstration; it is a live artwork commissioned by 14-18 NOW and produced by Artichoke. This project celebrates one hundred years since the first UK women got the right to vote. If you’re not already registered to vote, sign up here.
