Exhibition: In the wild wood

Home > Exhibitions > In the wild wood

Dates: 13th April to 21st April 2007

During April 2007, OVADA will be hosting artist's residencies, and a series of exhibitions in the gallery's foyer space while these residencies are happening. The second of these foyer exhibitions is by Linda Jane James.

Linda Jane James' work plays with ideas of automatic drawing, and the use of the drawn mark to tap into the unconscious mind. These ideas were first developed by the Surrealists; here, the artist brings these fascinations into the twenty-first century by including a participatory element into her exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to, in the artists words, "make their own crazy worlds visible on paper" in the window of the gallery, using charcoal pencils and paintbrushes attached to large sticks. As a result, the work on display will evolve as a collaboration between artist and audience - who may not even meet, but will be able to communicate by leaving drawings for each other.

The exhibition will also include a video work made with light and shadow, and large drawings cut out of paper, suspended to create shadows on the gallery wall. These will be further explorations of the workings of the unconscious shown through drawing and the hand-made mark.
