John Goto triumphs in eCritique
John Goto wins place on list of "Top 100 living geniuses"
Full details:
Photo-digital artist John Goto and Damien Hirst are the only British artists to be voted into the recently published Synectics Survey of Contemporary Genius 2007, a report that examines the concept of genius and attempts to list the top 100 geniuses alive today. The 2007 Survey placed John Goto in 58th place, sharing the spot with Jane Goodall, Kirti Narayan Chaudhuri, Paul McCartney, Stephen King and Leonard Cohen.

John Goto is a British artist who has gained critical acclaim through his use of digital manipulation, creating photographic montages with astute observations on our contemporary society. Recent exhibitions have included the New World Circus, a thinly veiled allegory of the occupation of Iraq set within a travelling circus, and Floodscapes, a series which explores the issue of climate change. Goto has had solo London shows at Tate Britain, The National Portrait Gallery and The Photographers' Gallery, as well as exhibiting widely internationally.

The report was conducted by Synectics, a global business ideas consulting company. 4,000 people in the United Kingdom were chosen to nominate 10 living people whom they considered to qualify as geniuses. Drawing upon the survey results, a panel of consultants compiled the report's list of the top 100 geniuses alive in the world today. The report describes five factors as defining characteristics of genius: paradigm shifting, popular acclaim, intellectual power, achievement and cultural importance.

The report attempts to define the zeitgeist of our time by avoiding many of the predictable media profiles in favour of a provocative list of individuals who have made a ground breaking contribution, for better or worse, to our current world. The emphasis is on involvement with new technological developments, and indeed the survey was conducted over the internet, compiled using a form of eCritique.

Call to Artists: Art & The Senses Exhibition
A new exhibition and publication to accompany a major conference to be held in Oxford on Art & the Senses.
Full details:
ART AND THE SENSES: THE EXHIBITION
CURATORIAL PREMISE:
Human knowledge relies heavily on sensory input. It is through the senses that people build a relationship with the external world, with each other, and with their inner self. "Art and the Senses" will explore the complexity of this cognitive system, by pulling together scientific, experiential and artistic evidence of the inter-connectedness of the senses.
This exhibition intends to create an interdisciplinary platform in which knowledge and experience can be enriched, shared and capitalized. Artistic investigations into the nature of the senses can play a crucial role in shaping empirical scientific research, by which they are in turn shaped.

For futher details on how to submit:
artists should email Dr. Bacci to discuss details on a one-on-one basis.
The deadline for submission is 15 July 2006, 12noon. Email francesca.bacci@hoa.ox.ac.uk

03 Gallery open for business!
The new 03 Gallery is now open and features an exhibition of photographs documenting the changes at Oxford Castle.
Full details:
The gallery has been developed by Oxford Castle and is presented in partnership with OVADA, Oxfordshire's Visual Arts Development Agency. And that partnership is believed to be a first as well - the first partnership (possibly ever) between a public agency and private developer, to create a gallery that will generate opportunities and funding for the visual arts in Oxfordshire. Oxford Castle Chair Trevor Osborne is delighted with the new space, the last piece of the project to be completed. Trevor says "The O3 Gallery will fill a gap in the Oxford arts scene and it is fitting that the first exhibition is by a talented young photographer, evidencing through a discerning lens, the transformation of the Oxford Gaol to Oxford's Castle of acclaim."

For OVADA, who run the substantial public gallery at Gloucester Green, this new space represents an important part of the visual arts infrastructure in Oxford - according to Development Director Janine Charles its "the icing on the cake! This new space provides another piece in the jigsaw - a small but high quality selling space for art, right where we hope lots of people will be interested in buying it." All profits from the sale of works will go towards supporting the development of visual arts locally.
