Painting and drawing have been important to me all my life, but not until recently, having turned 60, have I been able to devote full time service to my practice and begin exhibiting my paintings. My previous working life was unrelated to art, having been steered in an academic direction when younger, so that I received no formal artistic training, but nonetheless I always remained intimately involved with the creative process. I like to identify as an OWA – the Older Woman Artist – an under-represented ‘group’ – only recently being celebrated, and still approached with caution, but I like to feel, that as such, I bring all my life’s experience to my work.
I am interested in what oil on canvas can do to create images that play on our association with our relationships with places and people. My landscapes are semi-abstract but yet representative, displaying that ‘wild assemblage of beauty’ of the natural world and producing a sense of time and place. Lately, I’m tending towards larger and more expansive pieces as big gestural marks provide a more immersive experience for the viewer – my only limitation is working space. Recent portraits are larger whole figure work – here I’m aiming to use a combination of facial expression, body language, location, setting and the interplay of these elements with empty space on the canvas, to supplement the narrative, thus providing a sense of the presence of the whole person seen at a specific moment.
