Alice Brookes’s work is concerned with gender – exploring the relentless need society has to control and silence women, often through fear and shame in our media saturated world. Her performances are also about residue, what is left behind interests her as much as the performance itself, the idea of what remains. Her performance work encompasses elements of activism. Alice is also a writer and blogger. Her work draws on personal experience, politics, social media and artists both current and historical; alongside feminist theory that highlights the ‘depictions of women as saint or sinner, mother or monster’.
