Saturday 19th September 2020
10am – 4pm

Tutor: Robin Danely

This one-day workshop will focus on techniques in portrait painting in oils, for beginner to intermediate artists. We will cover basic colour theory, paint mixing and application, and will concentrate on the use of value to render our subject in a realistic and dimensional way. Experience helpful but not required!

Light refreshments will be provided; please bring a packed lunch if you need. A small selection of paints and surfaces will be available; if you already own some painting kit we would encourage you to bring the suggested materials:

  • 4-6 surfaces to paint on (canvas, wooden board, paper, etc) of small/medium size (8″x10” – 11″x14”). Please be aware that you will have to transport wet paintings home at the end of the day – Our tutor will show you how to pack them up and will bring some extra materials for this purpose.
  • Brushes: 5-6 brushes in varying sizes, ideally smaller sizes (2, 4, 6, 8, 10). Synthetic or synthetic blend are fine, or natural bristles if you prefer.
  • A palette: (wood, glass, plexiglass, or disposable pad) and palette knife.
  • Paints: ultramarine blue, cadmium red hue, cadmium yellow hue, and white will be required; yellow ochre, burnt sienna, Payne’s grey are optional.
  • Linseed oil: this will be used both as a medium and for cleaning your brushes — please no turpentine or spirits!
  • Kitchen towels or clean cloth rags
