Both artists, Sam Hamper and Edmund Spencer primary practices are painting. We both explore printmaking, drawing, sculpture, installation and photography. We plan to set up an exhibition called ‘Draw a line under it‘. This would be concluding a series of artworks that seem to have been going on for too long, and dedicating a week to their conclusion and extradition from our own studios.
Both artists are planning to work in the space independently. Fundamentally it will be a seven day performance, with concurrent audience access, culminating with an ‘open/suggested viewing’. Primary thoughts are conclusions and fresh starts, experimentation, public exposure, finalising old ideas. And who doesn't love a Sisyphean performance.
Both artists started painting late, both experienced some works that could be tinkered with ad infinitum and by working through this exhibition/performance, eventually enough is enough. Draw a line under it. This is a statement about clearing our own personal vulnerabilities with work you’re not satisfied with, trying to rectify mistakes. Unfinished work causes an itch and unsettles the studio. Time to stick a pin in it.
